FAQ

As with any product, people want to know why is it better, how does it works, can it fly, etc., etc. Hopefully all of these mysteries can be solved. If your deepest concerns aren't addressed here, feel free to e-mail us.

Thanks for your interest in our products.

Q: WHAT ABOUT THE PEN TRICK?

A: Before going to market, Stocks Locks were independently tested and were not able to be picked. The 7-pin cylinder we use is very difficult for even a professional locksmith to open. The operation of our cylinders requires the pins to be at the correct depth, within very tight tolerances. We, and our dealers, continue to be confident that our tubular cylinders are a safe and secure bicycle locking solution.

Q: WHAT IF I LOSE MY KEYS?

A: If you have registered your lock with us, we can order replacements. Be sure to register your Stocks Lock! Use the Order Form and send cheque or money order, and we'll send more keys. Mailing address is here.

Q: WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF STAINLESS STEEL?

A: The main advantages are resistance to rusting and freezing. Other locks are made from case-hardened steel. The hardening process makes the material brittle and, when exposed to freon or other liquid refrigerants, the steel becomes brittle enough to shatter with a hammer. The stainless steel maintains its ductility to extremely low temperatures and so cannot be shattered.

Q: WHAT KIND OF WARRANTIES DO YOU OFFER?

A: All of our products are warranted against manufacturing defects for three years. Since we have no control over how or where people lock their bikes, we do not have a bike replacement policy. Given enough time and privacy, a thief can get into anything.

Q: IF NO LOCK IS 100% SECURE, WHY SHOULD I BUY AN EXPENSIVE LOCK?

A: TIME. Quite simply, a better lock takes longer to compromise. Most locks on the market (including some of the more expensive models) can be accessed in less than 30 seconds! In lab tests with a vice and sharp tools, it has taken over 5 minutes to get into the Stocks Lock. Our estimate for a break-in on the street is OVER 20 MINUTES! Police statistics indicate that a thief will not waste more than about two minutes attempting to break a lock. With time as the deterrent, locking your bike with the best lock available makes the next bike on the street much more desirable.

Q: WHY USE FLEXIBLE CABLE?

A: We wanted to design a lock with as few access points as possible. Since the lock needs to go around the bike and whatever it is locked to, one access point is the practical minimum. The swaged wire rope allows the one-piece lock to be opened without a hinge, and the density and complexity of the cable make it highly resistand to hacksaws and bolt cutters. The flexibiltiy allows the lock to bend away from twisting, prying, and hammering forces, so it is nearly impossible to break using typical theft methods.
